Kelly Jenkins entered his bedroom for the first time in a week last Friday at University Place Apartments after sleeping on his sofa for a week to find standing water from a leaky pipe.
“That’s when I looked in my bedroom and there was just mold everywhere and there was still about an inch and a half of standing water there,” Jenkins said.
His clothes, laptop, furniture and books are all covered with mold. He also said he developed a rash on his face and cough from being around the mold.
Jenkins said he reported the problem on Friday to management and has several times since then, but is displeased with how it has been handled.
“They just come in and look at the mold and leave,” Jenkins said. “The first attempt, they sent a maintenance guy with a spray bottle of bleach to come in and get rid of the mold, but you can’t do that with this amount of mold.”
Management tells us they have given Jenkins keys to several apartments to move into while they get ride of the mold, but he has declined.
“They’ve tried to start moving him out of that apartment right away on Monday,” Mark Evans, public relations specialist for the University Place Apartments, said. “Actually I know they offered him a couple of different apartments right away and he wanted to go back to his original one. I was told he chose to stay in his original unit even though he knew it was unsafe for him to remain there.”
Jenkins said his friend is helping him move what is left of his possessions out of his apartment on Thursday and he is moving out.
“I really don’t have any place to go in Lafayette,” Jenkins said.
The apartment complex reiterated in a statement that it has tried to work with Jenkins and get him into a temporary unit, but he has rebuffed the attempts.
“We are in the process of arranging for the mold to be removed,” the statement read. “Once we have a timeframe for completion, we will notify the resident. He may have the option of moving back into his original unit after the mold is removed.”
